Military Angels of Calamarca

With the conquest of the New World the Spanish brought with them painting techniques unknown to the natives of the Americas, resulting in a particular interest in angels, making them a predominant figure in Spanish Colonial Art. Specific to the highlands of Peru, angelic images based on European prototypes gave way to distinctive mestizo representations.

Thirty-six paintings denominated the "Military Angels of Calamarca" were discovered in the church of Calamarca in Bolivia situated between the villages of La Paz and Oruro.  Dating from the viceroyalty of 1728, these angels are depicted bearing lances, banners, arquebuses, drums, trumpets, helmets and shields.

These "Militia of God" images are depicted here by PABLO RODARTE in three-dimensional form taken from these Spanish colonial paintings by unknown mestizo artists.  This was known as New World Art when the mesitzos broke away from the Spanish school and used the technique of oil painting and made it their own.  Mr. Rodarte has constructed out of glazed tissue paper, marionette-like archangels with a whimsical and original slant on the indigenous interpretation of celestial hierarchy.

Pablo has exhibited and sold his angels with great success at the New Mexico State Fair and Santa Fe’s renowned Spanish Market.  He is now working on a new series due for completion by June 2001.  Each series of five that he creates by hand are unique and original requiring one year of labor. Although based on the same theme, each series will vary.

Mr. Rodarte is also skilled in acrylics, watercolor, pastels, silkscreen, costume and fashion design and is a very accomplished tailor.  Mr. Rodarte also designs, creates and sells exquisitely beautiful Moroccan doors (pictures of his work is coming soon).

Los Angeles Militares de Calamarca


Con la conquista del nuevo mundo, los españoles portaron con ellos técnicas de pintar desconocidas a los indigenas de las Américas, sembrando un interés particular en los ángeles, haciéndoles una figura predominante en el arte colonial español.  Respectivos al altiplano de Peru, las imágenes angélicas basadas en prototipos europeos abrieron caminos a representaciones mestizas.

Trientaiseis pinturas denominadas " Los Angeles Militares de Calamarca" fueron descubiertas en una iglesia en Calamarca, Bolivia entre los pueblos de La Paz y Oruro.  Fechadas del Virreinato 1728, estos angeles portan lanzas, banderas, arcabuzes, tambores, trompetas, cascos, y escudos.

La milicia de Dios representada aquí por Pablo Rodarte es tridimensional , extraída de unas pinturas ejecutadas por pintores mestizos desconocidos durante la epoca colonial en Bolivia.  Desde este momento ya los pintores mestizos dan nacimiento a un círculo nuevo de expresión único a ellos, liberandose de la escuela europea.

El Señor Rodarte, escogiendo otro ángulo interpreta las pinturas mestizas en figuras de papel mache ó mas bien papel de seda dándoles una apaiencia de marionetas móviles.

Rodarte ha exhibido los arcabuceros con mucho éxito en el ´New Mexico State Fair´ y en el muy conocido ´Spanish Market´de Santa Fe.  En este momento Rodarte esta construyendo una nueva serie prevista para junio del año 2001. Cada serie de seis esta hecha a mano, única, y original tardando un año de labor para realizar.  Aunque las series estan basadas en el mismo tema, cada serie variará.

¡Ojo! El Señor Rodarte es muy habil en los medios de acrilico, acuarela, pastel, serigrafía, diseño, y es muy competente en la costura.  Asi que nunca se sabe que crearån las manos ingeniosas de Pablo Rodarte.
